Gilroy – Happy cows might make great cheese, but great books make children even happier.

The California Teachers Association is encouraging schools, parents and local businesses and organizations to take part in Read Across America 2005 on March 2.

In California, the theme for this year’s celebration of reading is “Happy Readers Come From California … Got Books?,” a play off of the slogan from the state milk board’s cheese advertisements featuring “happy cows.”

The featured book is “Farmer McPeepers and His Missing Milk Cows.” The story chronicles the adventures and mishaps of a nearsighted farmer who has lost his faithful milk cows because he can’t see without his glasses.

The National Education Association launched Read Across America in 1998 as a way to get kids excited about reading. The country’s largest reading event, Read Across America lands each year on or near March 2, the birthday of famed children’s book author Dr. Seuss.

There currently are no plans to celebrate Read Across America at Gilroy Library. Celebrations are planned at Antonio Del Buono Elementary, complete with Dr. Seuss hats. The school is looking for guest readers.

Ideas to organize events – such as breakfast read-ins, book drives or reading challenges – are available at www.nea.org/readacross. Parents are encouraged to call their schools to see if any events are scheduled.
