SALINAS – Following its first victory over San Benito in two years Tuesday, the GHS girls basketball team upset the previously undefeated Tri-County Athletic League opponent North Salinas Vikings 43-40 on Thursday night, capping a great week of basketball for the Lady Mustangs who now have the inside track to second place in the TCAL.
“We played to our strength and used our size inside,” head coach Tim Jones said. “We slowed the tempo which they didn’t like.”
The win pushes the Lady Mustangs to 17-6, 9-2 TCAL, while the Vikings, who still have a grasp on first, drop to 19-3, 9-1 TCAL.
“Chelsea Hill and Laura Steele did a good job rebounding for us,” Jones said. “Ashley Lambert hit a couple big three’s”
Lambert finished the night with eight points as did Geralyn Moon. Hill led all Mustangs’ scorers for the second straight game, posting 10 points in the effort.
“We kept the game close which helped us with our confidence,” Jones said.
The Lady Mustangs have won six in a row and will attempt to continue that streak next Thursday against Notre Dame. A victory against the Spirits guarantees Gilroy a second-place finish in the TCAL.
