More than 100 Gilroyans reported feeling a 3.6 magnitude quake Friday night that originated about halfway between Aromas and San Juan Bautista just after 11 p.m.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, 107 people from Gilroy reported the quake, which was felt as far north as San Francisco and as far south at Paicines. The USGS received a total of 1,102 responses in 103 area codes who reported weak to light shaking.
Though the earthquake was relatively mild, it still jolted Gilroy resident Gene Sakahara from his sleep Friday night.
“Whenever there’s an earthquake, I always make note of the time,” Sakahara said. “I always verify the next day that I wasn’t dreaming.”
According to Sakahara’s clock, the quake struck at 11:06 p.m. with a small roll followed by a “big jolt.” Then, “it was like a ripple in the water when you throw a stone in,” he said. “I could almost feel the ripples moving away from the house.”
With his two grandsons, ages 3 and 5, sleeping in the next room, Sakahara checked to make sure they were all right.
“They slept right through it,” he said.
