Scotts Valley man dies in accident

• Gilroy – A Scotts Valley man died this weekend after crashing his motorcycle at Tenth Street and Uvas Drive.

John Segal, 61, died at 12:55am Sunday from injuries sustained in the Saturday morning crash. No other vehicles were involved.

Segal was driving westbound on Tenth Street at 11:17am and was unable to negotiate a right-hand curve where the street becomes Uvas Drive and follows the levee, said Gilroy police Sgt. Kurt Svardal.

“We’re still trying to determine what the cause of the crash is,” Svardal said. “Speed could have played a factor, but it doesn’t look like there was extreme speed. (It could) have simply been inattention, didn’t realize the road curves like that because he’s not from the area.”

Segal was airlifted with major injuries to a Bay Area trauma center.

GPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing to investigate. Anyone with information about this incident may contact Gilroy police at 846-0350.

Police looking for hit-an-run driver

• Gilroy – A Los Banos man was injured in a three-car rear-end accident on U.S. Highway 152 east of Gilroy Friday evening, and police are looking for one of the drivers, who fled the scene.

The injured driver, 39, was driving a 1989 Ford Probe eastbound on Pacheco Pass Highway east of Holsclaw Road at 5:58pm Friday, when traffic in front of him stopped. He collided with a 1989 Chevy pick-up driven by a 50-year-old Hollister man, according to the California Highway Patrol. That pick-up collided with a Mazda pick-up in front of it.

The Los Banos man was transported to Saint Louise Regional Hospital with moderate head injuries. A passenger in the Ford, and the other drivers, were not injured.

CHP officers are looking for the driver of that truck as being involved in a hit-and-run accident. The Mazda pick-up was described as having an Enterprise Car Rental decal on the bumper.

Escapee turns himself in

• Morgan Hill – A 16-year-old Boys Ranch inmate who escaped Thursday night is back in custody, but this time in Juvenile Hall in San Jose.

Bill Fu, public information officer for the Santa Clara County Probation Department, said Monday that the teen had turned himself in at 4:20pm on Friday afternoon.

The inmate escaped from the William F. James Ranch on Malaguerra Avenue in east Morgan Hill, while inmates – ranging in age from 15 to 18 – were walking to the empty Holden Ranch facility adjacent to the property. During the walk a fight broke out between the 16-year-old and a 17-year-old inmate. After the fight, the 16-year-old escaped from the ranch. There were no weapons involved and no one was seriously injured in the fight.

After a series of escapes earlier this year, the James F. William’s Boys Ranch in eastern Morgan Hill has remained relatively quiet as county supervisors struggled to find ways to keep the inmates from fleeing the facility. Last week’s escape was the first in about a month.
