GILROY – The Gilroy High boys tennis team moved to 4-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League with a narrow 4-3 triumph over San Benito on Thursday in Gilroy.
The match, deadlocked at 3-3, came down the No. 3-doubles match, and it was the Mustangs tandem of Tevin Voorhees and Alex Medina outlasting Balers Mark Staritt and Travis Mills 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 to gain the all-important match-deciding fourth point.
“I think doubles, if they keep their heads in it, I think they can legitimately win every match,” GHS head coach John Langer said.
The Mustangs received a straight sets victory from No. 2-doubles Andrew Costa and Brandon Sumida, who defeated Jacob Panger and Geoff Muzik, 6-3, 6-2.
“The No. 2 guys have been consistent,” Langer said. “They’ve been really solid.”
No. 1-singles player Vinh Vong, shook off a sluggish start by his standards to capture a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kyle Skinner.
“I couldn’t really get my footwork situated until the second set,” Vong said. “That’s when I really closed out the match the way I wanted to.”
Vong has posted an 8-1 individual match record this season.
“He knows he can turn it on when he needs to,” Langer said about his No. 1 player.
Senior Oliver Drewry chased off Jake Garcia 6-4, 6-1, snapping a three-match losing streak.
“I’m just happy to break that streak,” Drewry said with a sigh of relief.
The Mustangs have a two-week break from league play before the second go-around with the five other teams begins April 13.
