I was amazed to see local self-declared atheist Marc Perkel make a moral judgment (letter 11/12) regarding the use of torture.
Since Perkel rejects that there is an Absolute Timeless Supreme Moral Authority (i.e. God), then on whose authority does he make his moral judgment that torture is wrong? Answer: his own.
Perkel needs to be more consistent with his atheism and realize that torture vs. no torture does not matter in the end, if, since, atheists proclaim when humans die there is no life after death and no God to face in judgment. The logical conclusion of atheism is that the human qualities of love, kindness, compassion and justice have been nothing more than a waste, an allusion, while waiting for the eternal condition of nothingness. How sad.
But speaking of torture, it’s really amazing that the majority of California voters chose to invoke self-inflicted “torture” upon all of us with their vote to give the Democrats control of all state politics. Now there is NO excuse for Perkel to blame the Republicans for anything that happens in this state.
As radio host Dennis Prager has written “this is the party (Democrats) that singlehandedly has brought one of the world’s greatest economies (California) to near ruin.” Prager continues, “We watch as one of the greatest places in the world – with its extraordinary natural beauty, almost uniquely beautiful weather and agricultural abundance – wastes all of this as a result of having become a left-wing experiment.”
Gov.-elect Jerry Brown’s “left-wing experiment” did not work in the 1970s, and there is no evidence to believe it will work come January and the coming years. It was Albert Einstein who said that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results was insanity. The Democrats with their welfare state giveaways, union-chokehold and anti-business practices fit this insanity mode perfectly. Brown and company will drive the state even more into bankruptcy. California is the “Titanic” that has hit the “iceberg” of insane politics – by choice – rather than by accident.

Refreshing to hear from a teacher that ‘American education is failing’

I found Lorrin Squatritto’s letter about blaming teachers refreshing despite the silly comparison to (the practice of) medicine.
It was good to finally read input from someone outside the parasites at the teachers union, and great that she admitted, “American education is failing.”
Part of this is indeed due to the breakdown of the family (meals, homework help, adequate rest). So I think she is right that the “good” teachers outnumber the “bad” ones and that “parents must do their part at home to make sure their children go to bed on time and give their best effort on homework.”
Lorrin goes on to claim the “bad” teachers do not understand the development of children, how to engage them in learning, or that have a short supply of patience.
One thing she left out was how a few “teachers” will use their classroom authority as a political pulpit. This is currently happening in Gilroy – a high school English “teacher” is using class time for as a front to push the homosexual agenda. (Local traffic is getting bad, too; maybe we should invest in our infrastructure and build a nice, high, east-west bridge.)

$25.4 billion budget hole … so let’s throw the bullet train on top

The trouble with the Gilroy Economic Development Commission is not the EDC, or its executives. The trouble is that the small business advocates here are working in a toxic environment, job-killing, boondoggle loving, spend-a-holic, radical socialist dominated state which ranks dead last in business friendly terms, and will remain so with our present legislature and pro-socialist policies. We need leaders who are willing to sacrifice their sacred cows as they are willing to sacrifice small business owners and taxpayers.
And let’s not add to the deficit with biggest boondoggle in state history – the bullet train, which will require about $4 billion annually in taxpayer subsidies. The state must address a budget problem of $25.4 billion between now and the time the Legislature enacts a 2011-12 budget plan. The budget problem consists of a $6 billion projected deficit for 2010-11 and a $19 billion gap between projected revenues and spending in 2011-12.
