finished first in its third tournament of the season with a 57-45
win over San Benito in the finals of the Watsonville Christmas
Basketball Tournament earlier this week.
WATSONVILLE – The GHS junior varsity boys basketball team finished first in its third tournament of the season with a 57-45 win over San Benito in the finals of the Watsonville Christmas Basketball Tournament earlier this week.
The victory marked the third straight tournament championship of December for the Mustangs.
In the championship game, Gilroy (11-1) was led by Dietrich Baumgartner’s 19 points and 13 rebounds and Nick Chang’s with 18 points. Robby Filice pulled down 10 rebounds.
The JV’s started the tourney with a 60-15 win over Watsonville. Stefan Mercer’s nine points, Steven Hebert’s seven points, and Charles Walker’s six points and seven rebounds, led the Mustangs.
The JV’s won the semifinal by beating previously unbeaten Salinas 56-46. Gilroy was lead by Baumgartner’s 12 points and10 rebounds and Ryan Valentino-Pickett’s 10 points.
Salinas had won 38 games in a row before the Mustangs put a stop to the streak.
Baumgartner and Chang were named to the all-tournament team.
