A wild, back-and-forth game went in favor of the Gilroy Little League 11-year-old softball All-Star team, defeating Consumnes River 17-11 to earn a Northern California Division II championship last Thursday in Rancho Murrieta.
Despite the game being called in the fourth inning due to Consumnes River having to stop play due to player illness/injury, both teams lit up the score board.
“The girls did a great job, played all the way through and persevered for a great game,” manager Denart Silveira said.
Alexis Conlon ripped a two-RBI single to kick start the scoring for Gilroy in the bottom to the first inning. Rebeca Reimal, Raegan Silveira and Stephanie Amstutz helped produce two more runs in the opening inning.
The second inning proved to be another long one as the sun slowly dipped down toward the horizon.
With great hits and stolen bases by Kaitlin Benjamin and Silveira, Gilroy maintained the edge.
In the top of the third Jocelyn Gomez made a great play for defense, catching a fly ball for the third out.
After three walks at the bottom of the third, Liezl Clark hit a triple, bringing her teammates home to push Gilroy ahead for good.
Gilroy went 4-1 for the tournament with its only loss coming in extra innings to Consumnes River, 15-14.
Pitchers Allison Ransom, who had two complete-game wins (Game 1 vs. Antioch, 9-2, and Game 4 vs Cosumnes River 14-6), McKenna Parks, Game 3 winning pitcher (14-7 over Antioch) and Sarah Weiby, Thursday’s pitcher of record, pitched well throughout the tournament.
Also, Morgan England provided strong defense behind the plate catching all five games.
