SALINAS – It all comes down to this.
After dismantling Alisal on Tuesday night in a vicious three-game sweep (25-8, 25-6, 25-13), the Gilroy High boys volleyball team is one victory away from a highly coveted Tri-County Athletic League championship.
Standing in the Mustangs’ way is a Monterey High bunch (24-7, 14-1 TCAL) eager to redeem a five-set loss earlier this season.
Gilroy (20-9, 14-1 TCAL) was the last team to hand the Toreadors a set loss in league, winning a barnburner 3-2 on March 30.
Monterey easily handled third-place Seaside in a three-game sweep Tuesday.
The two league powerhouses play for the title Thursday night in Monterey. Game time is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
Nico Sandoval had a game-high five aces to go along with six kills Tuesday night, and Albert Chavez notched 15 kills to lead all players in that department. Dietrich Baumgartner rattled home eight to accompany two blocks, adding to his league-leading numbers (111) in that category.
The Mustangs’ lone league defeat came in five sets to Palma on April 22.
