The four Live Oak High School who were kicked out of school for wearing American flag shirts on Cinco de Mayo have taken the national airwaves by storm, and now the Tea Partiers of Silicon Valley want a piece of the action.

Tea Partiers will rally from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday on Third Street and Monterey Road. Nearby, at the Third Street Promenade, the first farmer’s market of the year will kick off.

The Tea Partiers said they will rally with American flags and red, white and blue will abound. The rally is a show of support for the four Live Oak students who were sent home after they refused to turn their American flag T-shirts inside out on Cinco de Mayo, as administrators had requested in order to stem any violent confrontations.

The incident has sparked controversy in Morgan Hill and been the focus of a national conversation on immigration and First Amendment rights.

The episode comes just days after Arizona’s tough new immigration law, which strengthens its borders and allows police to question people they suspect have crossed the Mexico-U.S. border illegally. Many have decried the law as racial profiling, including some San Jose City Council members, who are urging a memorandum that asks San Jose to abstain from signing any new contracts with companies based in Arizona.

“As you have seen on the news, they got sent home from school for wearing the flag to school on Cinco De Mayo. While this is not an official (Tea Party Patriots of Silicon Valley) event, we are patriots and we don’t think this is right,” said an e-mail sent out by the Tea Party Patriots of Silicon Valley.
