SALINAS – Needing to release some frustrations after a disappointing two games over the weekend, the Gilroy High baseball team did just that, unleashing an offensive firestorm on Alisal in a 12-1 five-inning Tri-County Athletic League affair Tuesday in Salinas.

“This is the medicine my team needed before the big game against Palma on Thursday,” GHS manager Johnny Ramirez said.

The win helps the Mustangs (13-8-1, 9-4 TCAL) keep pace with the Chieftains (14-6, 9-3) in the win column, setting up the crucial rubber game of the season series Thursday in Gilroy. Both teams have one win in the previous two games versus each other. The winner would be locked into second place with three games remaining in the regular season.

Max Fishler went the distance (five innings) Tuesday, striking out three, walking three and surrendering just five hits.

Chris Urtiz went 2-for-2 with three RBI, Brent Newton posted a 2-for-3 afternoon, including a double and a RBI, and Gabe Bonilla scored three times. Also, Neal Dinsmore and Taylor Chris each drove in two runs, Reed Kienle had an RBI-double and Jordan Dexter also plated a Mustangs’ run.

Thursday’s game against Palma was originally scheduled for Friday.

Game time is still set for 4 p.m.
