SALINAS – It wasn’t easy, but the Gilroy High varsity tennis team knocked off North Salinas 4-3 in Tri-County Athletic League action Tuesday in Salinas.
With the match deadlocked at 3-all, Mustangs’ No. 2-singles player Sattea Khay sealed the win with a 7-6, 6-3 decision over Winnie Chen.
After Khay eked out the first set 7-6, Chen jumped ahead 3-2 in the second set. However, Khay rallied to take the next four games to give GHS the deciding point and the match victory.
“This was a very close match,” head coach Jami Reynolds said. ” I think we went in over confident and it showed.”
The two teams split the four points available in singles play, with North Salinas gaining the upperhand at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
GHS No. 1-singles player Jennifer Kwong handled Amanda Porrez with ease, 6-2, 6-0.
The Mustangs’ No. 1-doubles pairing of Melanie Morelos and Elaina Vasquez upended Brenda Santana and Liztrelle Mangompit in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, while Lindsay Holt and Sami Holder swept their No. 2-doubles match, 6-3, 6-3.
The Mustangs continue their league schedule against Salinas at GHS on Thursday. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
