Don’t just shop local; shop Gilroy.
Forget the glossy wrapping paper, bows, and ribbons. For those interested in a little more meaningful gifts there are several items that should be on the list. Some items a little more Gilroy than others but nonetheless reminding family and friends of where the heart is.
1. Edibles
There are several food items that can be purchased at a local store. From well-known products made by Christopher Ranch, like their garlic & ginger stir fry ($3.99) or minced roasted garlic ($2.99); hot sauces like The Pepper Plant Chipotle Sauce ($4.99); Andy’s Original Recipe Rub ($9.99); and Garlic World Onion Stuffed Olives ($4.99). 2. Beverages
Along the same lines of food there are also the multiple award-winning wineries that call Gilroy home. There is Rapazzini Winery conveniently located near the Garlic Shoppe and Garlic World. There’s Sarah’s Vineyard on Hecker Pass Hwy or Kirigin Cellars, the region’s oldest winery. 3. Kokoro Candles
It might be fair to say that Gilroy sisters got tired of garlic’s aroma. With over 10 different scents, their vegan-friendly soy candles are hand poured and created from 100% essential oils. They come in glass containers ($24-30) or in tins ($12). Contact: 848-5136, shop.kokorocandles.com.
4. Art
Every community is filled with its artist and it’s not any different in Gilroy. Whether it’s photography or painting, sculptures, or ceramics. Local artists produce work that not only they can be proud of but also the buyer. Elissa Sue creates watercolor artwork that she sells at artisan markets and online. She has a handmade, made to order 2016 wall calendar on 8.5 x 11 matte paper ($28). 5. Gardens
Although not open all year, Gilroy Gardens Family Theme should be visited at least once. The park can be enjoyed by anyone ($37 online). There are more than 20 rides including a vintage train, paddleboats, a rock maze, and more than 10,000 trees. A few of those known as circus trees due to their interesting shapes. 6. Blooms
At most occasions, flowers can be given. Whether visiting a loved, graduating from school, or Valentine’s Day. South Pacific Orchids can help with flowers. 7. Quilted Trees
For those arts and crafts inclined, Nimble Thimble has got a project. Offering fabric, books, and patterns to its loyal patrons the quilt shop also welcomes beginners. Available are two different patterns to inspire a Christmas tree quilt, tall tree ($8) and shorter tree ($6). The shop owner is more than glad to help answer any questions and be of help. 8. Jewelry
There are always commercials on the radio about buying jewelry. Thrift stores carry a ton of jewelry and if patient enough, garlic jewelry can be found. 9. Ornaments
The sky is the limit when it comes to ornaments. Having said that, what better gift than a garlic ornament. There is a small garlic ($5.99) or bigger garlic ($7.99) to choose from. 10. Tee Time
Just like there are several different wineries and vineyards there are enough golf courses in town. There is variety as much as they are affordable. There is Gilroy Golf Course, the oldest course in Santa Clara County (about $30 for 18 holes with cart). The course is located at 2695 Hecker Pass Highway in Gilroy. Contact: 848-0490.
