Gilroy Mustangs

Coach Dan Mooney and the Christopher basketball team travelled to his former stomping grounds and left with a ‘W.’
The Cougars opened league play with a 61-52 win over the Mustangs Wednesday at Monte Vista Christian. 
Zander Bowers led the Cougars with a double-double of 18 points and 19 rebounds. He also had three assists and two blocks. 
Chad Hartman scored 15 points for Christopher in addition to nine rebounds and two assists. Dillon Day chipped in with 13 points, four rebounds and two steals. 
Thomas Ellis gave his teammates open looks, racking up 10 assists in addition to five points, five rebounds and a steal. 
Christopher has won its last four straight and boasts a 10-3 overall record, 0-1 in the Monterey Bay League-Gabilan Division. It will host San Benito at 7 p.m. Jan. 14. 
Condors soar past Gilroy
North Monterey County routed Gilroy 64-17 in Wednesday’s Monterey Bay League-Pacific Division opener. 
The Mustangs were held to a single point in the second half, while the Condors scored 28 of their own. 
Stats for Gilroy weren’t yet available. 
The Mustangs (2-11 overall, 0-1 in league) will be back on the court at 7 p.m. Friday at Pajaro Valley. 
GIRLS SOCCER
Cougars fall to Cowboys in league opener
One goal was all Salinas needed to top Christopher. 
The Cowboys won 1-0 over the Cougars Wednesday at home to open Monterey Bay League-Gabilan Division play. 
Alondra Partida scored in the 56th minute on an assist by Brittany Tibbs for Salinas.
Christopher (2-5 overall, 0-1 in league) will be back in action at 5:45 p.m. Friday at Notre Dame.
