CHINO HILLS—The Pac-Coast 11U baseball team opened the USSSA World Series tournament with a bang. The Gilroy-based squad went a perfect 2-0 on Tuesday, notching wins over Park Bums and the East Los Angeles Athletics.
Pac-Coast began with a back-and-forth battle with Park Bums and finally broke away with two runs in the final frame to win 6-4.
Raymond Bustos brought home the first with a ground ball single to score Larry Reimal. Eli Sepulveda grounded out on the next play, but it was enough time for Mikey Cambria to race home for Pac-Coast’s final run.
The Park Bums struck early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Pac-Coast answered with three of its own in the top of the second, thanks to a Sebastian Llamas double that scored Justin Cortez to get their team on the board.
With runners on the corners, Reimal doubled to score Llamas and even the score. David Seanez scored on a passed ball on the next play to put Pac-Coast ahead 3-2.
Park Bums leveled the game in the bottom of the inning, but Pac-Coast took the lead for good in the top of the third when Llamas singled to left field to score Eric Cantu.
Llamas led his team with two RBIs on two hits. He also pitched three innings and struck out two. Reimal also had two hits for Pac-Coast.
Cortez was stellar on both sides of the ball for Pac-Coast in its 8-1 win over the Athletics. He went 2 for 2 at the plate—singling in the second and third innings—and scored two runs. Cortez also recorded three hitless innings on the bump. He walked one and struck out six.
Cortez was the first to score for Pac-Coast, coming home after Llamas reached on an error. Llamas scored on a passed ball to give his team a 2-1 lead after two innings.
Pac-Coast padded its lead when Bustos scored off Jacob Wood’s ground out. Singles from Cantu and Llamas added two more runs for Pac-Coast, putting it ahead 5-1.
Cantu had an RBI on two hits. Pac-Coast tallied 10 hits as a team.
Seanez hit a line drive double to right field to score Cortez and Reimal singled on the next play, bring Llamas home. An error allowed Seanez to score the final run for Pac-Coast.
The team will play a doubleheader starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday when it takes on Attack Baseball Club. It will then play Lights Out Baseball Club from Arizona at 11 a.m.
