Dear Editor,
This letter responds to that of Gary Elia, published Friday.
Mr. Elia, one of the dictionary definitions of a veteran is “A person who has served in the armed forces.” It is therefore quite apparent that Mark Zappa, who served in the U.S. Air Force from 1977-81 as an Air Policeman, is a veteran.
Further, on occasion, when I need help from my fellow veterans on any issue of importance to Gilroy veterans, whether it be the annual Memorial Day parade, assistance to the family of Specialist Cory McCarthy, or most recently, honoring the service of Lance Cpl. Jeramy Ailes, Mr. Zappa has dutifully given generously of his time and resources without complaint.
Each of us chose to wear the uniform and serve our nation, and whether that service came in wartime or peacetime is almost entirely a matter of accident of birth.
Let not “we band of brothers” denigrate another who made the same choice we did.
Robert T. Dillon, Gilroy
