BART plan to include alternatives
San Jose – If the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors gets its way, the county’s master transportation plan will include alternatives to a BART extension stretching from Fremont through downtown San Jose to Santa Clara.
The unanimous vote means that supervisors Pete McHugh and Don Gage, who are also on the Valley Transportation Authority’s board of directors, must vote in support of studying alternate routes.
The VTA is scheduled to vote today on adopting a draft of the Valley Transport Plan 2030, which ties in with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s master plan for the same 25-year period. The extension called for in the current draft will cost about $4.1 billion, which is at least $2 billion more than the VTA can afford. Budget shortfalls have inspired calls for a shorter extension, ending in Milpitas.
Gage said Tuesday that he will ask the VTA board to postpone a decision on the draft for a month to allow further public input.
Car hits bull, two injured
Hollister – A 2,000-pound bull jumped a fence and was hit by a Lexus, sending two Hollister residents to the hospital. The bull died.
Bich Huynh, 25, was flown to Stanford Medical Center after suffering facial lacerations and brain hemorrhaging after her 2002 Lexus collided head-on with the black Angus bull that was standing in the middle of Union Road near Union Heights about 11:20pm, Saturday, said CHP Officer Matt Ramirez.
Hollister resident Kyle Martino, 24, was a passenger in the car and only suffered minor injuries but also was flown to Stanford Medical Center.
Huynh was in critical condition Wednesday, Ramirez said. Ramirez said the car was most likely traveling the speed limit – 55mph – when it came upon the bull.
“Black cow, black night – they couldn’t see anything,” he said.
While the bull’s weight rivaled that of the approximately 3,500 pound Lexus, it didn’t make it and died at the scene, Ramirez said.
