GILROY – California Student Opportunity and Access Program will hold its meeting tonight at the Gilroy High School Thea-ter, at 6 p.m. The event will feature a coffee social and raffle sale followed by guest speaker, Principal Bob Bravo.

California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) is a state and federal program whose primary focus is students who are of low income and/or first to attend college in their family. The program offers tutoring, financial aid workshops, college tours, ACT and SAT prep and testing, guest speakers and much more.

Become a retail pro

GILROY – Gilroy Economic Development Corporation in conjunction with the Silicon Valley Workforce Investment Network, Career Advancement Solutions and Gavilan College Small Business Development Center will hold a series of eight-hour training courses to help others learn the basics of working in retail. The workshops will be held on Fridays, Feb. 6, 20 and March 5, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Gavilan College SBDC offices in the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church Street, building E.

Walk and learn

GILROY – The Gilroy Historical Society will lead its next free walking tour around town on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m., beginning at the Gilroy Museum, 195 Fifth St. The tour will feature various historical areas. Reservations are preferred but not required. Details: 848-0470.

Gav still open to register

GILROY – The Late Registration Period for Spring Semester at Gavilan College, originally scheduled to close on Friday, Jan. 31, has been extended through Friday, Feb. 6. Many class sections are full, but additional sections have been added for a number of high-demand classes, to give more students an opportunity to enroll.

Students who wish to register in person may go to one of the following Gavilan College locations:

Youth and work together

GILROY – The South County Division of the Mexican American Community Services Agency (MACSA) Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Youth program will host “Mano en Mano” on Friday, Feb. 6, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at Gilroy One Stop, 190 Leavesley Road. This is an evening of fun and food to strengthen the friendship between the developing youth workforce and the new businesses of Gilroy.

Laurence Juber Concert

GILROY – The Strand Theatre, 7588 Monterey St., will host Laurence Juber as he gives “An Inter-active Con-cert Exper-ience” on Friday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m.

Ju-ber was hand-picked by Paul McCartney to become Wings’ lead guitarist. After Wings disbanded in 1981, Juber embarked on a solo career and soon developed a reputation as a world-class guitar virtuoso.

Apply for grants

GILROY – The Gilroy Assistance League is accepting requests for grants for 2004. Last year, GALS gave out more than $10,000 to various local children and youth causes. Requests should be a hand written letter asking for a certain amount of money and telling what that money will be used for if granted. Caltrain public hearing

SAN CARLOS – The Caltrain Board of Directors will hold a public hearing on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 10 a.m. at Caltrain headquarters, 1250 San Carlos Ave., to receive comment on Caltrain’s proposed service levels, which would include Baby Bullet express trains and the reinstatement of weekend service. The new timetable would take effect this spring, subject to the rail agency being able to bring its budget into balance.
