Lady Mustangs get No. 5 seed, will play Piedmont Hills on
Saturday
GILROY – The Lady Mustang hoopsters will live to play another day, as their playoff petition to the Central Coast Section was awarded, putting them as the No. 5 seed up against No. 4 Piedmont Hills in Saturday’s opening quarterfinal round.
Gilroy finished the season with an 11-15 overall record and 3-7 league mark, which was shy of the automatic bid for teams with a .500 record in either. But after two straight dominating wins over North Salinas and Live Oak to close out the regular season, second-year head coach Kari Williams had a strong case for making the Division I Playoffs.
Piedmont Hills also finished with a below-.500 record at 9-13 overall. The winner will play again on Wednesday, March 3 against top seed Alisal (17-8), which received a bye.
Last season, the Lady Mustangs made a run into the semifinals, defeating Mount Pleasant and Fremont, before losing to eventual champion Archbishop Mitty.
