Mustang kickers top Palma, 2-0
SALINAS – There was one more team standing in the way of the Gilroy High boys soccer squad’s undefeated season, and that was league-foe Palma, which hosted Thursday’s make-up game at the Salinas Sports Complex.

The Mustang kickers scored one goal in each half and did not allow the Chieftains to get on the board, cruising to a 2-0 victory.

The Tri-County Athletic League Champions finished the regular season with a 9-0-1 mark in the league and 18-0-5 overall under coaches Armando Padilla and Brian Hall.

Ranked No. 2 in the Central Coast Section with the final rankings still to come out on Sunday, the Mustangs now await their first-round opponent for Wednesday’s home playoff game. Gilroy has lost in the first round of the playoffs the last two seasons.

In the regular-season finale, junior striker Everardo Diaz de Leon opened the scoring off an assist from teammate Alfonso Motagalvan, who netted the second goal on a penalty kick.

Gilroy won its first league title since 1984 and is hoping for its first CCS crown since 1991.
