MORGAN HILL – Best selling author Khaled Hosseini, will talk about his book ‘The Kite Runner’ at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at BookSmart, 17415 Monterey Road at West Second Street. The Kite Runner is number three on the San Francisco Chronicle paperback best seller list for fiction and also on other best seller lists.
Hosseini, a physician in Fremont, tells a story of growing up in Afghanistan before the Russian invasion and later, as an adult, under the Taliban. While the story is fiction, it reads as a memoir, giving insight into the life of children and the world of friendship, fathers and sons, religion, politics and life as a Bay Area immigrant. Collecting items for troops
GILROY – Boy scout Devin Collins is continuing his Eagle Project of collecting items and sending them to the troops in Iraq through July 4. Help him complete his project while supporting our troops by donating items such as, hard candies (Skittles, Life Savers, Blow Pops, Jolly Ranchers), sun screen, CDs and CD players, toothbrushes and pastes, dental floss, drawing and writing supplies, energy bars, unscented soaps and lotions, Ziploc bags, powdered and sweetened drink mixes, Wet Wipes (Lever 2000 are preferred), bug spray (with less than 20% DEET), beef jerky, personal toiletries, fly swatters, gum (in blister packs), gel deodorant, DVDs, hand sanitizers, Game Boy games, lip balm, mending kits, eye and nose drops, sealed card and travel-sized games, and letters of support.
Collections barrels are located at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St., open Mondays through Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and at the San Martin Country Park and Pumpkin Patch, located on Monterey Road.
Items will be shipped through the Red Cross: Operation Comfort and Care.
