June festival
GILROY – The Kemetic Institute, Cultural Center and Museum, 7469 Forest St., presents its second ‘Juneteenth Celebration’ on Thursday and Friday, June 17 and 18.
On Thursday, discover good food and music from 6 to 10 p.m.
On Friday, join in for the Chili Cookout Competition and judge the best chili in Gilroy from 1 to 8 p.m. Non-food vendor space is available.

‘Thank you my Deer’
GILROY – Chitactac-Adams Park will hold ‘Thank You My Deer’ from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 18.
By using every part of a deer, the native Ohlone people honored the taking of the animal’s life.
Discover how deer were used by the Ohlone for food, tools, games, clothing and a variety of other uses. The park is located at Watsonville and Burchell roads.

Join the ‘Moon over Buffalo’
GILROY – South Valley Civic Theater will hold auditions for their upcoming production ‘Moon Over Buffalo,’ on Friday, June 18 with 7 p.m. check-in for 7:30 p.m. audition and on Saturday, June 19 with a 9:30 a.m. check-in for a 10 a.m. audition, and 1 p.m. check-in for a 1:30 p.m. audition.
Auditions will be at the theater located behind Kelly Moore Paints on Monterey Road, just north of Leavesley Road.
The play is an adult comedy with four male roles, aged from the late 20’s to 60’s and four female roles, aged from the late 20’s to 80’s. Actors should prepare a 1- to 2-minute monologue.

Go fly a kite
GILROY – Experience the excitement of Kite Flying on Saturday, June 19 with the ‘Third Annual Family Kite Day’ at Pacheco State Park, in a big windy field. Watch the sky dance with clever and imaginative kites from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Everyone who flies a kite receives a souvenir Kite Day button. Other fun activities include a ‘Make Your Own Kite Free’ table, pie eating contests, bubble blowing contests and interesting displays to check out.
There will be trophy awards for ‘Best Kite Made by an Individual 15 and Younger,’ ‘Best Kite Made by an Individual 16 and Older’ and ‘Best Kite Made by a Group.’
The event is sponsored by California State Parks and is financed by the Four Rivers Natural History Association and Pacheco State Park’s Fatjo Corporation, and marks the occasion of Pacheco State Park’s Seventh Year Anniversary as a state park.

Families are encouraged to bring a kite, hats, sunscreen, drinking water and a picnic lunch.
The only fee is the $4 state park day use fee per car.
To reach Pacheco State Park, take Highway 152. Park is located 25 miles east of Gilroy and 22 miles west of Los Banos, at the top of historic Pacheco Pass. Turn south off of Highway 152 at the ‘Dinosaur Point’ exit, and then turn right, go through the Park gate and follow the kites down the dirt road into Pacheco State Park.

Historic potluck, BBQ
GILROY – The Gilroy Historical Society will hold their annual ‘Meeting and Potluck Barbecue’ on Saturday, June 19, at Chitactac Adams County Park from noon to 2 p.m.
Enjoy delicious trip-tip and beverages served on paper goods provided by the society. Please RSVP to Elizabeth Barratt at 842-3750 by Tuesday, June 15.

Walk in wonder woods
GILROY – Go on a ‘Redwood Hike’ at Mt. Madonna from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 26.
Explore the amazing redwood forest on this two-mile hike with a park ranger. Discover the many wonders of this unique ecosystem.
Bring hiking shoes, layered clothing, water and sun protection. A $4 vehicle fee to enter the park will apply.
