James Brown, who detailed his life of alcohol and drug addiction in the critically aclaimmed memior The Los Angeles Diaries, will be speaking at Barnes&Noble in Gilroy on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 7:30.

Brown’s unflinching depiction of his own history (fueled by Jack Daniels, Johnny Walker Black, cocaine and methamphetamines) is an oddly uplifting Angeleno tale in the vein of Luis Rodriguez’s Always Running whose biting humor helps to alleviate the tragedy that plagued the author’s childhood and young adult life.

Clean and sober since 1997, Brown is the author of four novels, including Lucky Town and Final Performance. A recipient of the Nelson Algren Award for Short Fiction and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, he has taught at several universities, including Cal State San Bernandino and the University of South Dakota, as well as writers’ workshops.

Barnes&Noble is located at 6825 Camino Arroyo, Gilroy.
