Dear Editor,

I was very disappointed to read your endorsement of John Kerry for president. Since I have been a boy, I always thought that newspapers were built on truth and a fair editorial page with good journalistic intelligence. As I have gotten older, I have come to see that that is not true.

Editorial pages are not much more than propaganda machines for what ever political bent that the newspaper subscribes to. Fact is demoted, and innuendo and half-truth is the byword.

You say that the United States is in far worse condition than four years ago and good jobs are going overseas. Well, do some investigative reporting and you will see that the Clinton Socialists cooked the books to an awful extent and left office on the cusp of a serious recession which George Bush inherited. In fact there was no surplus.

I have spent many years in business and found in my experience that when business goes overseas it is to minimize the effect of “over the top” union demands and excessive taxation. Look around Gilroy, we are building retail business as quickly as possible and stores are doing well. The construction and real estate business is booming. We have a landscape of fast food restaurants doing a booming business. In our country 95.5 percent of the population is employed. Isn’t that a positive?

If your candidate gets in, rescinding the tax cuts will indeed create a de facto tax increase on the people who generate new business. Guess what happens then! Less jobs, less capital investment and more poverty. The socialist ideal to give more control of the government over our lives. John Kerry says the middle class is in trouble. Well, most of this is as a result of the taxation of the Socialist Party in previous administrations. I look around our area and find little problem with the middle class. The biggest problem I see is when I look at my paycheck and see the 27 percent that goes to government waste. John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, Hillary Clinton, and others have been the architects of raising these taxes for giving money to folks who don’t deserve it in exchange for votes. They aren’t the only ones, there are many Republicans who are guilty of the same thing.

It is also a disappointment to me that the Congress seems to get a pass from the press. I learned in school that the Congress made and passed laws. Presidents can certainly exert influence but it up to Congress to make our laws and watch over our land. If we get a socialist congress, all bets are going to be off and taxes will rise, incomes will plummet and their agenda will come true.

You speak of divisiveness in our country. In reading the newspapers, listening to the candidates and their party organizations it is clear to me that the Socialist Party is the one creating the divisiveness. Listen to John Kerry telling lies, undermining the military, scaring older Americans over Social Security. The recent lies and misleading statements by the New York Times regarding the missing weapons in Iraq are a great example. Our government went to the U.N. for many months to get Saddam to disarm. While we tried to diplomatically work the problem, the U.N. gave Saddam the cover to move any major weapons systems and money to safe havens. John Kerry was a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee and made very few meetings, as well as few Senate appearances. This tells me was really worried about America! I hope he shows up if he is elected!

I have always supported your paper and mostly enjoy your columnists and letters to the editor. However, this recommendation makes me realize how much trouble we are really in. It is a poor editorial and full of half-truths and propaganda. I would have loved to see a discussion of the real issues and a suggestion for people to make up their own minds. Kerry is the leader of the party which, in Pennsylvania has more Democrats registered in four counties than people who live in those counties, has trashed the offices of their opponents as close to us as Hollister.

When you talk of Kerry as a leader in wartime, I really resent that. He spent four months riding around in his boat. Many veterans who have no ax to grind talk about his poor performance and I am mad as hell about his trashing our soldiers. I spent my four years in the Marines and wasn’t coward enough to quit after four months so I could get out of the service. The press gave Michael Moore plenty of press with his treasonous movie but not a peep about the Swift Boat Veterans. That my friend, is propaganda not journalism.
