Surrender those muddy flowerbeds to an ocean of bright yellow daffodils or the Easter egg colored hues of a mixed bed of tulips. It’s time to plant those bulbs.

It’s the perfect time to plant bulbs because the fall rains will soften the earth and the soil temperature has cooled down. If you have pre-chilled your tulips and hyacinths, dig them out of the refrigerator to plant now. Choose from: Anemones, Crocus, Daffodils, Hyacinth, Iris, Tulips, Narcissus, Ranunculus, Freesias and many more. Ideally your bulbs should be planted by the holidays.

After you’ve planted the bulbs, cover the flowerbeds with bedding plants – Iceland poppies, pansies, primroses, cyclamen or violas. This “double decked” planting will give you beautiful color to look at through the winter. In early spring when the bulbs poke through you will have a breath taking display of blooming color.

Ask your local California certified garden center for bulb charts, bulb planters, and more to get you growing.
