Gilroy – Not every Gilroy school has an after-school program, but those that do want parents and community members to drop by and learn more about them.
Although not as comprehensive as Morgan Hill and Hollister, Gilroy Unified School District’s After-School Program will, in fact, be participating in a nation-wide effort tomorrow to draw attention to how beneficial the extra school-day hours can be for students.
Gilroy residents who want to know more about the program are invited to visit any of the five campuses that host students for three additional hours every afternoon.
Eliot, El Roble, Glen View and Las Animas elementary schools, along with South Valley Middle School, will be open to visitors from roughly 2:30 to 5:30pm Thursday.
“It’s to help people recognize the importance of after-school programs,” said Judith Dunham, who administers the program.
GUSD received a grant two years ago to focus on three areas for low-achieving students: academic assistance, recreation, and enrichment.
District paraprofessionals and tutors from Gavilan College tutor students and offer homework help, as well as the enrichment portion that often incorporates arts and crafts or music-centered activities.
The local YMCA provides instructors to offer physical recreation for an hour every afternoon.
Because the program is funded specifically for students below grade level, those with the most academic need are enrolled first, Dunham said, and must meet certain criteria to enroll. Students also must attend one of the schools that has the program.
The following schools will be open to the public Thursday afternoon:
• El Roble: 2:35 – 5:35
• Eliot (located at Ascencion Solorsano Middle School): 2:15 – 5:15
• Glen View: 2:45 – 5:45
• Las Animas: 2:35 – 5:35
• South Valley: 2:20 – 5:20
