You’re in luck, caller. The Red Phone got in touch with the City of Gilroy Engineering Department’s one and only Don Dey to figure out what’s in store.
“We have awarded a construction project to install a left turn signal on Church Street at First. So that would be Church Street that has the left turn signal,” he said. “That construction is due to get started in December of this year or January of next year.”
So the news is good, and caller, it won’t be too much longer before you can make a protected turn.
who’s watching me?: “Hi there. I was just wondering about the cameras at the intersection of Santa Teresa and Longmeadow. I’m just wondering who is watching and why are they watching? Thank you.”
Hmmm … the Red Phone wondered too, so after a little checking again contacted Don Dey, the kindly information guru that he is, had the answer, and added that the cameras can also be found at Mantelli, Welburn and First streets.
“Those cameras are detection cameras. Because of construction, the traffic loops in the ground have been destroyed,” Dey said. “So that we can maintain detection of the vehicles and have the traffic signals respond to the actual vehicles that are there, we’ve placed what’s called ‘above ground detection.'”
But caller, rest assured, no one’s watching what you do alone in your car at those intersections.
“It happens to be a camera that is pointed and can detect when there’s a vehicle in the area. It doesn’t record anything, it just detects – just like a traffic loop would be in the street,” Dey said. “It just detects whether a vehicle is there or not.”
Heck no to casino: “We don’t need any casinos in our area. To me they’re a disgrace to the American Indians who’s land we took away and there’s no way we can make up for that by putting casinos in place. Thank you for listening.”

parking lot chaos: Sick of sale signs: “I would just appreciate it if you’d put in the paper about all the garage sale signs.
“There are garage sale signs all over town that people put up and for whatever reason decide to be irresponsible and not take them down. It’s really an eyesore.”
