– The Gilroy High School Choirs will be presenting their annual
Fall Concert Wednesday Oct. 27 and Thursday Oct. 28. This is the
choirs inaugural event for the 2004/2005 school year.
The program will feature the five choirs from Gilroy High
School. The choirs involve 160 students and are under the direction
of Phillip Robb.
GHS choirs present concerts

Gilroy – The Gilroy High School Choirs will be presenting their annual Fall Concert Wednesday Oct. 27 and Thursday Oct. 28. This is the choirs inaugural event for the 2004/2005 school year.

The program will feature the five choirs from Gilroy High School. The choirs involve 160 students and are under the direction of Phillip Robb.

The concert will be held at St. Mary Church on the corner of Monterey and First street in Gilroy. Doors will open at 7pm, and the concert will begin at 7:30pm. There is a $3 donation at the door to help cover the costs for all of the choirs festival activities later in the year.

Both evenings will feature the Concert Choir, Women’s Chorus, Men’s Chorus, Concerto Delle Donne, and the Chamber Singers.

Thursday evening will be the first ever performance of the combined Middle School Choirs. This is the first year for a choir program at South Valley Middle School and Solorsano Middle School. The two choirs will join together with Brownell Middle School choir to create a 100 voice chorus of 6, 7 and 8th graders.

The concert will include a variety of music from Sea Chanteys, Gospel, Folk, Madrigals and more. Composers will include Antonio Lotti of the renaissance to Morten Lauridsen of USC, Mendellsohn from Liepzig to Stephen Foster from Pittsburgh. Or course there will be music by the well known composer “St. Anonymous”. Languages will include French, Serbian, Hebrew, German and even English.

The Chamber Singers will be also be performing on Friday Oct. 29 in San Francisco with the two-time Grammy Award ensemble “Chanticleer.” The concert will be held at the First Unitarian Church, 1187 Franklin Street in San Francisco. The concert will feature five outstanding high school ensembles from Northern California and Chanticleer. The concert begins at 7:30pm.

Fire season comes to an end

Morgan Hill – The Santa Clara Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, with the approval of CDF Sacramento, has declared the end of the 2004 Fire Season as of 6pm Wednesday, Oct. 20. The declaration also ends the Bay Area SRA Burning Ban. Stations will continue to staff one engine per station 24-hours a day until 8am Monday, Oct. 25, at which time all season employees will be laid off.

Fire season and the open burning ban has ended in the counties of Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, and the west sides of Stanislaus and San Joaquin.

Gav prepares for Homecoming

Hollister – Gavilan College Athletics, the Gavilan College Educational foundation, the Gavilan College Associated Student Body, and the Gavilan College Cheerleaders are getting ready for the annual Homecoming game and tailgate party this weekend when the Gavilan College Rams take on the Hartnell Panthers.

The Gavilan College Cheerleaders will provide a halftime show, and there will be a brief sponsor recognition after the third quarter. Homecoming is sponsored by Greenwood Chevrolet and other donors.

A tailgate party before the game will feature lots of participation from student clubs. The first 750 people through the gate will get free pizza (provided by Roundtable), chips, and drinks provide by Pepsi. The first 100 students with ASB cards who show up will get a free movie ticket provided by Platinum Theaters.

The tailgate party begins at 6pm, Saturday, with the game starting at 7pm at San Benito High School, Hollister.

Festival benefits community

Gilroy – The Exchange Club of Gilroy is holding a “Harvest Festival” on Oct. 22, from 6 to 10pm at the IFDES Lodge. Cost for dinner is $15.

Celebrate Grandparents Day

Gilroy – On Friday, Oct. 22, come celebrate Grandparents Day from 9am to noon at St. Mary’s School.

Each student is encouraged to invite grandparents or senior special friends to spend time with them in the classroom. The event begins with a prayer service in the church at 9am and lead the parents to recess at 10am followed by classroom activities.

Bats in our Belfry

Almaden – Join Park staff and bat expert Dave Johnston for an exciting look into the secret lives of bats at the Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum. Bats in our Belfry walk will be held Friday from 6:30-9pm.

Take a short walk to see and hear real bats in historic New Almaden.

Republican party headquarters

Gilroy – The Republican Party of Santa Clara County has opened their local Gilroy Headquarters at 1230 First Street, Suite 201 in the Hecker Pass Plaza near ACE Hardware, said Gilroy resident Mark Zappa, a member of the Republican Central Committee for Santa Clara County.

Zappa, who is also Co-Chair of Bush/Cheney 2004 for District 1, said the office will be open on Monday’s and Tuesday’s from 1 to 4pm, Thursday’s and Saturday’s from 9 to 11am. The office is being utilized to coordinate precinct activities as well as to distribute yard signs, bumper stickers and campaign literature.

Aromas Autumn Art Festival

Aromas – Join the Aromas Hills Artisans at the “Autumn Art Festival” on Sunday, from 8am to noon at the Aromas Grange.
