Dear Editor:

I have been reading about several heated issues in The Dispatch and have yet to see any of these questions asked or answered in a logical, non-divisive way.

On the question of Wal-Mart, Cynthia Walker recently (Friday, March 19) stated “… Costco is mostly a union shop. Wal-Mart is not …” going on to state that the only reason that Wal-Mart was being protested was due to not being union or having a lack of “good benefits.” My question is not about unions but about what a Wal-Mart supercenter is bringing to the community table? Lower prices? More traffic? Quality goods that cannot be bought elsewhere? A chance to buy cheaper and more often? More revenue for the city? As for the approval of Costco, we did not have anything like it in South County.

The other issue that is a hotbed for debate, is on gay marriage. I have a statement and then a question. Marriage is a religious ceremony between a man and a woman. It use to be, that when a couple was joined together at City Hall, it was called a civil ceremony – separation of church and state. Why should that change now? I would hope not because it is a touchy-feely subject.

My final statement and question is on Gilroy itself. I have seen Gilroy make some interesting decisions lately, the stores on the east side of town when most of the townspeople live on the west side of town and west of the freeway, rebuilding downtown, not re-building downtown, spending a huge amount on a new police station, complaining about money, putting a modern arts center in a historic downtown. My question? Where is the big picture for Gilroy?
