Free child seat inspection

Gilroy – The California Highway Patrol and AAA will conduct a free Child Safety Seat Checkup tomorrow between 10am and 2pm at the AAA office in Gilroy. Certified Child Passenger Safety technicians will be available to check for proper installation and use of child safety seats.

The safety seat checkup will help educate the public to the proper methods of installing and selecting the correct type of restraint for their children based on age, weight and size.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, national studies indicate a misuse rate of approximately 80 percent. Last week, two young children were ejected from a minivan that rolled over on U.S. Highway 101 because they were not properly restrained in a safety seat.

The goal of the CHP and AAA is to provide education and instruction to parents, guardians and caregivers to reduce injuries and fatalities due to improper installations.

All are welcome to attend the safety checkup, but appointments are preferred. The AAA office is located at 1395 First St.

Details: CHP Officer Terry Mayes at 848-2324 or for an appointment, Carmen Jones at AAA at 847-2300.
