Gilroy – A teen-age girl who told police she was kidnapped remains missing – apparently in hiding, despite her kidnapper’s arrest – and hasn’t contacted her family or Gilroy police in more than a week.
Detectives are continuing to investigate the case and are following up on leads to locate 16-year-old Ebony Carter, said Sgt. John Sheedy of the Gilroy Police Department.
Carter has been missing since Sunday, Nov. 14. She was due to return to her San Mateo County group home that evening. Her family dropped her off at the bus depot on Monterey Street, but she never returned to the home. Two days later, Carter called the group home to say she had been kidnapped.
Following a tip from Carter, police arrested Benjamin Teutsch, 29, in Milpitas. He was arraigned Monday on one count of kidnapping. That charge stems from an Saturday, Nov. 13 incident, in which a woman says Teutsch tried to force her into his white 1986 Dodge van in the parking lot of McDonald’s at First Street and Wren Avenue. He is being held without bail for violating probation.
That attempted kidnapping occurred within a few blocks of where Carter told her family Teutsch tried to kidnap her the following day, hours before she went missing.
Based on what Carter tells police when they do get the opportunity to interview her, Teutsch could be charged with two other counts of kidnapping.
Carter also has had no contact with her Gilroy family members since making a cell phone call to her sister last Wednesday.
In that call, she said she was hiding from Teutsch and would stay there until he was in custody.
Garlic fest searches for 2005 art poster
Gilroy – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, Inc. is now accepting entries for the 2005 Art Poster Contest.
A $750 first prize will go to the entry which is judged to best capture the spirit and essence of this premier food festival. In addition, the First Place winner shall receive 10 posters and one of each souvenir item produced with their artwork. The second place winner will receive $400 and third place $200.
The winning entry will be reproduced as a high quality, limited edition poster to be sold at the 27th Annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, July 29, 30 and 31, 2005.

SV Symphony presents holiday concert
Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony presents their Holiday Concert at 4pm, Saturday, Dec. 18, in the Gavilan College Theater.
The program will consist of traditional holiday Christmas carol sing-along, plus selections from the Messiah by Handel, featuring the Gavilan Concert Choir under the direction of Phil Robb.
Featured soloist Doreen Wilson will perform, with the orchestra, the Carmen Fantasy for Flute and Orchestra by Bizet.
Tickets are on sale at the Music Tree and BookSmart in downtown Morgan Hill, Mission Gallery in San Juan Bautista, Dorothy McNetts in downtown Hollister and in Gilroy at Snappy Photo located at 785 First Street, as well as the California Music Company and Porcella’s Music store in downtown Gilroy
Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors age 60 and older and $7 for students ages 12 to 18. Children younger than 12 will be admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult.

CMAP’s student, teacher video festival
Gilroy – Community Media Access Partnership (CMAP) is hosting its first ever “Student Video Festival” to encourage the local educational community to use video technology in their classrooms. Local high school and college students, and teachers, are invited to enter.
There are nine students categories and one teacher category, specifically designed to encourage classes of any subject matter to participate. There is no entry fee and the deadline is Friday, Dec. 17.
All eligible entries will be cablecast on CMAP channel 19; ED-TV. A live awards ceremony for the festival will be held on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 at 7:30pm and all participants are invited to attend.

Sheriff’s Web site crime target: DUI
Santa Clara County – The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office changed its quarterly “Crime Target” feature from Identity Theft to persons with outstanding warrants for DUI.
Captain Lindley Zink chose this target to remind those that the holiday season is upon us and if you are out celebrating just remember to do it responsibly.

Join the Lions for breakfast at supper
Gilroy – The Gilroy Lions Club will hold their annual “Omelet and Pancake Supper” from 5 to 8pm, Friday, at the Presbyterian Church, 6000 Miller Ave. Tickets will be available at the door for only $6 for adults or $3 for kids ages 12 and younger. All proceeds will benefit the Lions Club’s sight program.
