SAN JOSE – The Lady Mustangs found their rhythm early as they to two games Friday and Saturday defeating both Mount Pleasant, 53-42, and San Larenzo Valley, 42-29.
Against Mount Pleasant, the girls dominated the first half scoring 33 of their 53 points in the first two quarters.
They would never look back.
Senior Sarah Hoeft led the team in scoring with 12 points, 10 of which were in the first quarter. Hoeft, who scored all 12 in the first half, found herself in foul trouble in the later goings of the game.
Also having a good game was Sophomore Katherin Hussey with eight points.
All 10 of the players in Friday’s game would score.
“It was a really good team effort, one of our better efforts.” Mustang Coach Kari Williams said. “The girls really stepped up and met the challenge. I’m really proud of what they did in the game.”
The girls would carry their momentum with them into Saturday’s game with a sound defeat over San Larenzo.
The scoring was balanced with Marissa Nowakowski and Kristian Campos each with eight points. Kendall Costa, Michelle Difiore and Hoeft all finished with six.
According to Williams, the game was physical, but not a lot of fouls were called on both sides. But she said that the team was able to hold their own.
“It was pretty rough in there,” Williams said. “The girls did a good job and held their own.”
So far in the season, the Mustangs have had trouble on the foul line, but in the game against Mount Pleasant, the girls went a perfect 10 for 10 from the line.
Nowakowski had a great game for Gilroy, especially on defense.
“She had a great game, she did a great job,” Williams said. “She opened up her press and did a wonderful job getting the ball tied up.”
Based on previous games, these were real improvements. The girls are now 2-1 in preseason play and Williams is optimistic about the progression she is seeing.
“Things are starting to look better,” Williams said. “Things are starting to gel. Things are looking good for out offense and our press.”
The girls’ next game will be against Silver Creek on Tuesday.
