A local man’s robot took third place in a contest at a West Coast Robotics event in Atwater and qualified for the robot fighting national competition in San Francisco in October.
Morgan Hill resident and Team DMV member David Wiley’s ant-weight (1 pound) robot “Stumpy” won his first fight by default when the other team dropped out; and he won his second fight against Meat Slicer, built and driven by Plato Zorzy of Team Reprop, and his third fight against Havok, built and driven by David Liaw of Team Ice, by pushing them out of the arena. But he lost his fourth fight, against Senior PITA, when Senior PITA, built and driven by Adam Duarte of Team Sacbots, used its spinning drum to throw Stumpy.
That sent Stumpy down to the loser’s bracket, where he battled Meat Slicer again for the fifth fight, and won by pushing Meat Slicer out of the arena. The same happened in the sixth fight when Stumpy pushed out Hazardous Waste, built by Adam Duarte and modified and driven by Jenna Whittle of Team Sacbots. But in his seventh fight, Stumpy lost to VDD-Kit, when VDD-Kit used its spinning weapon to bash Stumpy out of the arena.
The fights were part of West Coast Robotics’ inaugural event Aug. 14 and 15. Those interested can see Stumpy take on ant-weight robots from around the country at the Robot Fighting Leauge national competition Oct. 8-10 at Fort Mason in San Francisco.
