I’m calling in hope that The Gilroy Dispatch will provide us with a little bit better coverage of the junior varsity and freshman football teams this year. Last year there was hardly any mention of these teams and their victories and the boys who played – whereas the varsity got all the attention. Having followed Pop Warner for almost 15 years, they have much better coverage than you folks give to these other kids. Also, the other teams at Gilroy High – baseball, soccer, hockey – all get very, very good attention. Why the same can’t be done for the junior varsity and freshman football teams is beyond me. These kids work as hard as anybody else and should be noticed for it.

There’s no doubt the kids on the JV and freshman football team work as hard as anybody else. That can’t be denied.

Unfortunately, it just becomes a matter of space when the new school year rolls around and the sports section is trying to cram everything into a few pages.

Eight varsity teams compete in the fall. While it would be nice to be able to cover the freshman and JV teams in each of those sports, it simply becomes impossible to fit it all in. And if we were to cover just freshman and JV football, that wouldn’t be fair to all the other freshman and JV teams.

In the past, it’s also been about a lack of resources. Before adding a reporter a month ago, one busy editor handled every story that went into the sports section. With a new writer, The Dispatch will attempt to include as much coverage as possible. Of course, help from the coaches is always appreciated. I wanted to make a comment about the Olympic Games. I think that NBC has finally got it right. After the last few Olympics, they were showing only the Americans and they were talking more than they were showing. They’re finally showing — at various times of the day and night — just about every sport on one or more of the stations. So I congratulate them for FINALLY getting it right. There can be some improvements, but it’s not bad.

Good observation. It’s not bad. But really, would it be too much trouble to show us SOME live events in the late morning/lunchtime hours. Show it again in primetime. No problem. But the Green Phone would really like to get its instant Michael Phelps’ results from NBC rather than ESPN.com.

Have you noticed that – whereas students used to complete high school and have the summer off to work their jobs, be on vacation, be with their families, do some projects – they can’t do that anymore. Sports goes all through the summer, which means any student that wishes to join or try-out for a team when school starts … it’s too late, because the teams have already been decided before or during the summer vacation and families can’t go away together, kids can’t complete their jobs and students can’t sign up for various sports. The teams are already full. So something is wrong there. Summer vacation is summer vacation. And school sports are supposed to school sports … not summer sports or this ‘leave out everyone else that can’t get there during the summer, too bad … when it comes to the school year, you can’t participate.’ Anyway, that’s my beef.

Wow. Couldn’t have said any better ourselves.
