It is a time of relative calm, which makes it ideal to plan for the busy months of fall. So here are some things to keep an eye on during this prime time:

Pay special attention to foundation shrubs around the house. Plants and shrubs that were planted closely for a quick fill several years ago are now stepping on each others toes. Uproot them and replace them with more modestgrowers. Dwarf conifers and junipers, in particular, are ideal for the foundations. Azaleas and camellias are good suggestions for the shady spots.

Reappraise the design of flowerbeds and their relationship to open areas and living areas in the landscape. There is no reason to keep a bad design that you inherited from someone else or laid out yourself in an earlier period. Take the big step now and redesign, first on paper and then in fact.

If you love fresh limes for your summertime coolers, plant the Bearss Lime. It’s seedless and juicy with that tangy sour taste you look for in limes. The Bearss Lime is also ideally suited to California gardens wherever oranges do well.

August weather is ideal for planting dwarf citrus or full sizes tree varieties. The warm days will get these heat lovers off to a good start. Make a basin around the tree for proper irrigation and plant it higher than the soil level to keep water from standing on the trunk.
