Dear Editor:
The editorial page spends enormous quantities of time calling names. Some chastise people because they are “liberals” and self-proclaimed liberals fire back criticizing those they call “conservatives.”
Several columnists have decided to define liberal so I am going to define, using my Webster’s American Dictionary, conservative and reactionary. With all three definitions in mind we can decide for ourselves which actors on this page are conservative, liberal, or reactionary. (I’ll leave radical for another time since it doesn’t seem to fit any of the present characters that pontificate on this page.)
“Conservative: One who opposes sudden changes in government or policy; a believer in things as they are.”
“Reactionary or reactionist: One who wishes to go back to things as they were, or were imagined to be, before …”
Now we can proceed to call names using the proper definitions.
