GILROY – City police officers were pleasantly surprised about how relatively crime- and fire-free the July 4 long weekend was compared with past years, one supervising officer said Tuesday morning.

Last year, fireworks caused nine structure fires resulting in losses of about $425,000.

This year, one minor fire broke out Saturday causing damage to a wood-shingle roof of a two-story apartment building on Kelton Drive.

Illegal fireworks and drugs were the holiday weekend’s hottest criminal possessions, according to police.

Officers said they were kept busy seeking out and confiscating illegal fireworks, especially Sunday night. They had not tallied the number of fireworks-related tickets as of press time.

In addition to these citations, police logged 41 arrests between Friday morning and Tuesday morning. Of these, 12 were on suspicion of possessing or being under the influence of illegal drugs – mostly for methamphetamine and marijuana.

During the same period, police arrested four people on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, four for public drunkenness, two for weapons, two for theft, two for domestic battery and two for resisting arrest.
