Mr. Swan was born July 6, 1937 in Watsonville to Marie Josephine Sargent and Franklin Douglas Swan.
He graduated from Bellarmine Prep in Santa Clara and earned a B.A. in Art and a M.A. in Librarianship from San Jose State University. He married Nancy Lynn Hanselman on June 24, 1961 and had one son, Frederick Douglas, in 1964.
In 1970, Mr. Swan became Head of Branches and later Assistant Director of The Jackson County Library System in Medford. In 1982, he moved to Evanston, Wyo., where he served as Uinta County Library Director until his retirement in 1999.
In Evanston, he was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, The Gideons and The Roundhouse Committee, as well as helping found the Evanston Rotary Club and later served as President.
The Swans returned to Medford in 1999, where he was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Southern Oregon Philatelic Society and Roxy Ann Gem and Mineral Society.
He was President and Scripture Secretary of the Gideon Rogue Valley North Camp.
He enjoyed his cat P.G., gardening and painting landscapes.
Mr. Swan is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nancy Swan; son, Fred Swan and daughter-in-law Eva, as well as many beloved cousins and friends.
A viewing will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Perl Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Zion Lutheran Church. Internment will follow at Siskiyou Memorial Park.
