Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of June, weather permitting. The work hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 8 a.m. to noon and midnight to 6 a.m. on Fridays. There will be reverse one-way traffic controls with up to 15-minute delays expected. Please remember to ‘slow for the cone zone’.

Second-hand sale

GILROY – Las Madres of Gilroy will hold its semi-annual garage sale from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday and Saturday, May 14 and 15, at 110 London Place.

Parents shouldn’t miss out on the chance to browse through hundreds of gently used baby and maternity clothing, baby care items, furniture and toys.

A portion of the proceed will go to benefit Las Madres and additional merchandise collected will be donated to local children’s charities.

Bands test their skills

GILROY – On Friday and Saturday, May 14 and 15, the Gilroy High School Bands will be hosting the California Music Educator’s Association Bay Section Area 8, ‘Band Festival’ in the GHS theater from 4 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Twenty-eight Middle school and high school bands are rated on a scale of 1 (superior) to 5 (poor) in their performance and in how well they read new music for the first time by a panel of four judges.

The Gilroy High School Symphonic Band will play at 8:10 p.m. and the Wind Ensemble will play at 9:35 p.m. in the theater on Friday.

The performances are free and open to the public.

Setting the record straight

GILROY – The Monterey Street Music Academy will sponsor Nan Bostick as she gives a lecture/recital on Saturday, May 15 at 2 p.m., at the home of Academy director, Candace Fazzio. Bostick’s presentation ‘Who Started Those Indian Songs? – A HEAP BIG Tale of Political Incorrectness’ uses entertaining music with historical pictures to detail the unwitting contribution of ragtime composer and publisher, Charles N. Daniels (also known as Neil Moret) to the history of ‘political incorrectness’ in America.

The public is invited to attend. Tickets are $10 each. This is the last of this year’s family-oriented events sponsored by the Monterey Street Academy.

GILROY – The Odyssey Theatre Company is offering a $500 community scholarship to seniors graduating from Gilroy High School this year.

Clean up county creeks

SANTA CLARA COUNTY – Volunteers are needed on Saturday, May 15 to help scour about 40 miles of creeks throughout Santa Clara County for trash during the eighth annual National River Cleanup Day, sponsored by the Creek Connections Action Group.

Volunteers should report at 9 a.m. to any one of 32 sites from Palo Alto to Gilroy.

Participants are asked to wear long pants, sturdy shoes and sunscreen. Cleanup supplies and refreshments will be provided.

MORGAN HILL – The fifth annual ‘Art a la Carte’ will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 15 at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center. This is a fun and interactive day of art projects for kids from infants to 10 years old.

This year’s theme, ‘Art Around the World’ will feature art projects from countries and cultures around the globe.

More than 15 art stations with different art projects for children to explore.
