Youth group gets grant

GILROY – The Little Rascals, a youth group associated with the East Eighth Street Neighborhood Association, received an $850 grant late last week, according to a county neighborhood networking specialist.

The Little Rascals plan to spend the money on food, entertainment and legal fireworks for a Fourth of July celebration on East Eighth Street this year, said Daniel Chavez of United Neighborhoods of Santa Clara County.

The source of the grant is True Teens Taking Over, a wing of Community Foundation Silicon Valley, one of the area’s best-known philanthropic trusts.

The Little Rascals had applied for a $1,000 Youth and Philanthropy grant. A team of teens and young adults from TTTO interviewed members of the youth group on May 1 at the Downtown College Preparatory Charter High School in San Jose.

2nd Annual Dance

The Lana Wright Competition Dance Teams are holding their 2nd Annual Father/Daughter dance from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, May 14, at Britton Middle School Auditorium. The cost is $25 a couple and $5 for each additional daughter. Photos will be available at the dance and refreshments will be served. Wrist corsages available for $15 pre order only.

Fun for the disabled

GILROY – Gilroy Community Services Therapeutic Recreation presents ‘Friends and Family Fun Fest’ from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on May 22, at Las Animas Veterans Park.

The event is for the developmentally disabled to take part in a fun and social environment. It includes limited carnival games, unlimited jump houses and games, lunch and a T-shirt, and is free to participants with special needs, or $10 for non-developmentally disabled persons. All participants must register before May 14.

Stay sober, stay safe

The California Highway Patrol will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on May 15, the same night as the San Benito High School Prom.

CHP drug recognition experts will be on site to provide spot assessments of drivers suspected of drug and/or alcohol use. Officers will have access to preliminary alcohol screening devices, which accurately measure blood alcohol concentration.

All drivers passing through will be checked and impaired drivers will be arrested.
