Gilroy High School is now enforcing a California state law on the campus that was never enforced before that prohibits outside vendors on campus.

“We think that it is the problem of students ordering deliveries; it has gotten worse, perhaps because so many more students now have cell phones,” said Principal Robert Bravo.

For as long as I have been going to the high school, I can remember seeing Fruit Frizz and different pizza places delivering to the front gate at lunch. Things changed recently when a message in the bulletin from Assistant Principal Greg Camacho-Light announced it is against district policy to have food or beverage delivered to campus and that any delivery will be turned away.

According to the rule, only parents or guardians can bring food to the school for their child. Friends can’t leave on their free period and bring back food and a student can’t have a delivery person from a restaurant come and deliver the food. “A student can bring any food they want to as their lunch,” said Bravo.

What’s the difference if a parent or a delivery person brings the food? The student still isn’t buying from the school.

Do administrators think students would have drugs or weapons concealed inside deliveries? If students wanted to bring those kinds of things they could bring them in their pockets at lunch or the beginning of the day.

Also, the food they sell at school is very fattening and unhealthy like fries and bread sticks and cookies. Having the same menu every day gets really old. Students want a little variety. And the lines … the school is very overcrowded and when all the hungry students rush out to the quad to eat the lines fill up very quickly and students spend most of their lunch time waiting in line and don’t get very much time to eat.

Some might argue “bring a lunch from home.” But we don’t have lockers to store our things in during the day the lunches get squished very easily in our backpacks.

Besides, when students order food from outside venders in town it helps out the local economy. Local businesses make more money which increases the tax base of the city. Also it is helping we the students to exercise our right to give business to whomever we want.
