The Gilroy Assistance League, a group of 35 women who are
dedicated to raising funds to support Gilroy youth activities, will
honor this year’s grant recipients following a brunch at the Old
City Hall on May 14 at 10:30 a.m. In addition to the brunch and the
awards ceremony, the Gilroy High School Chamber Singers
– recently back from their tour of Germany and the Czech
Republic – will be presenting a musical program.

Learn about workers rights
The Gavilan College Associated Student Body, Stand Together Group, and Gavilan College Career/Transfer Center, invite those who are interested in learning about workers rights, workplace issues and labor history to visit Gavilan College for International Workers’ Day, Monday, May 3.
Events scheduled for the day include a lunchtime information fair, a panel discussion at 12:30 p.m. in room BU 120 with labor activist Dolores Huerta and Gilroy Mayor Al Pinheiro on labor issues and the controversial Wal-Mart store coming to Gilroy. Microeconomics instructor Ken Miller will moderate the discussion.
From 1 to 5 p.m., several films will be shown in the student center, including one about an undocumented Mexican immigrant in the United States won numerous awards, including the Prix de la Caméra d’Or (1978) at the Cannes film Festival.
From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., a workshop in the student center will explore the relationship between the declining economic conditions at home and the war in Iraq.

Fishability Day
The members of Sportsmen Club will host “Fishability Day” on Saturday, May 1, beginning at about 8 a.m., at Mendoza Lake on Roop Road.
This is an opportunity for disabled kids to get out and catch fish. Free hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas, chips and a T-shirt to all disabled participants. Almost 1,500 planted trout from a hatchery in Northern California await the 130 kids expected for the event.
Cost to put on the event is more than $5,000, which is funded by the Sportsmen Club, whose members will prepare the food, provide the bait and assist the fishers. County parks is preparing the parking area and providing chemical toilets, as well as the fishing poles.
The club was formed when a bunch of guys first got together about 18 or 19 years ago to form Sportsmen, Club, which meets once a month.
According to Sportsmen member Steve Mitchell, their main project for the last eight or nine years has been Fishability Day.
Race for a cure
GILROY – Gilroy’s “Race For A Cure – 10K Race and 5K Race/Fun Walk” will be held Saturday, May 15, at Christmas Hill Park’s Ranch Site.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Gilroy Relay For Life.

Blood Drive
GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a community blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave.
In May, the American Red Cross is trying to build a large reserve of blood for an expected drop-off in the summer due to donor vacations.
Donators must be 17 years or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Please bring ID, two forms if it is not government issued. To speed up wait time, schedule an appointment at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE.

GILROY – The Audobon Society and the City of Gilroy invite Gilroy residents to attend a “Earth Day” celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, at Christmas Hill Park.
Local environmental organizations will be on hand with fun activities for the entire family.

Help our critters
SAN MARTIN – Helping Paws presents “San Martin Animal Shelter Fundraiser” from noon to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, in front of Pick-A-Dilly and All Aboard Junction, 1120 First St. in Gilroy.
Combining a raffle, bake sale, face painting, balloons, music and animals from the shelter, makes this fun for everyone.
Raffle tickets are only $1 and players do not have to be present to win. All profits will go to the San Martin Animal Shelter.
Donations are being accepted and are very appreciated.
National Pet Adoption Days
GILROY/MORGAN HILL – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) is partnering with Petco during National Pet Adoption Days to help find loving families for homeless companion animals.
Come to the FOSMAS petfairs from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, May 1 and 2, located at Petco just north of the shelter in Gilroy, and at Petco at the corner of Tennant and Monterey in Morgan Hill.

Natural fun
MORGAN HILL – Join Henry Coe Park this weekend for fun with nature.
The “Hug-a-Horse Ride” will take place Saturday, May 1 at 10 a.m., starting from the Hunting Hollow Entrance.
Members of Coe’s Volunteer Horse Patrol will have their horses on hand for visitors to meet, and will talk about horse tack and how to properly care for horses.
“Basic Skills for Interacting with Nature” will take place at 10 a.m.
Move into the flow of nature using skills perfected by the Native Americans. Mike Meyer will teach a few simple skills, including stalking and wide angle vision.
Plan to spend three to four hours, and bring snacks and water.
At 8 p.m. discover “The Four Seasons of Coe” as Marlene Testaguzza leads a tour of Coe Park with her beautiful slides of nature scenes.
On Sunday, May 2, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., “Wildflower Walks” will begin from the Visitor Center.
