In Gilroy’s volleyball match against Scotts Valley Thursday night, sophomore outside hitter Kayla Meazell led the Lady Mustangs with 12 kills.
None was bigger than her final one.
With GHS leading 2-1 and clinging to a 25-24 game 4 lead, Meazell spiked the clincher beyond the reach of Scotts Valley and Gilroy hung on for a 26-24 victory.
“Yeah, it was really nice to end it right there,” Meazell said.
After recent victories over Santa Teresa and SLV, the Lady Mustangs have now strung together three straight wins to up their record to 4-1.
“Right now we’re feeling pretty good,” said senior middle forward Kendall Costa.
Scotts Valley didn’t go away easily, though.
After Gilroy dominated the first game, 25-19, the Lady Falcons rallied for a highly competitive 27-25 win.
But when Scotts Valley took a 15-10 lead in Game 3, the Lady Mustangs staged a rally of their own, winning 15 of the final 21 points en route to a 25-21 victory.
Then, leading 23-20 and just two points away from a win, it looked as if Gilroy would close the night out.
But the Lady Falcons answered GHS’s four points in a row with four of their own and suddenly found themselves one point from forcing a decisive Game 5.
“We didn’t really want to have to go that fifth game,” Gilroy coach Sam Navarez said. “It’s a shorter game and there’s a lot of luck involved.”
Not willing to take a chance, the Lady Mustangs closed the deal with three straight points.
“They’re coming around,” Navarez said. “We still need to get some of the basics down, and we really need to get them talking out there – communicating better.
“But hey, we’re sitting here at 4-1. I can’t complain about that.”
