Gov. vetoes salon safety bill
Sacramento – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed a bill that would have established new safety standards for nail salons. Authored by Assemblyman Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, AB 1263 would have required salons to meet minimum standards for pedicure and manicure equipment and to establish procedures for cleaning and maintaining the equipment.
The law also would have required salons to conspicuously post violations. The bill was introduced after more than 120 people contracted a bacterial infection after receiving pedicures in San Jose salons.
A subsequent inspection did not find the bacteria in South County, but a handful of salons were cited for other infractions. The bill passed the Assembly 79-3 and the Senate 24-12.
