Gilroy – The Gilroy Fire Department was set to receive this morning a gift of $1,000 from the Barney Garcia Endowment, created by the William and Marji Buehler family. The fire department will purchase additional training materials and supplies.

The gift is the second in as many years to the GFD in honor of Barney Garcia, a member of Gilroy’s then-volunteer fire department in the 1930s and ’40s, and Marji Buehler’s father.

The first gift, made after the endowment was created last year, allowed the department to purchase a life-like CPR dummy that is used to train not only Gilroy firefighters, but residents taking first aid classes through the city’s Community Services Department.

William and Marji Buehler are a minister and retired teacher living in Tucson, Ariz., said their son, Michael Buehler-Garcia.

“The real kind of message that they have is, you don’t have to have a ton of money to help things out,” he said. “You just have to pick things that you care about and help any way you can.”

The family hopes to continue the $1,000 gifts to GFD each year, eventually turning the endowment over to the city.
