At a windy Twin Creeks Golf Course, the Gilroy High golf team blew away the competition.

Competing against five TCAL rivals in Salinas Tuesday, the Mustangs shot a collective 150, winning the tournament by eight shots over second-place Hollister. Salinas High finished third at 169.

“Gilroy played lights out today,” GHS coach Eric Kuwada said. “We played really well and managed our games.”

Leading the way to victory was No. 1 player Kristen Campos. Out of the 30 golfers competing at the event, the junior from Gilroy finished first with a personal-best, 3-over-par 34.

Campos was hardly the only Mustang to shoot the best round of her career, though.

Seniors Amy Kishimura (36) and Carissa Filice (37) posted personal bests, as well as junior Carla Navarro and sophomore Amanda Bruce, who knocked in a career-first birdie and par, respectively.

“All the girls played their best golf,” Kuwada said. “(Assistant coach) Barbara Wind and I have been helping the girls manage their games better around the greens.

“I think we are starting to see some of the hard work start to pay off.”

The Mustangs next hit the links with a tough match against Notre Dame next Thursday at Gilroy Golf Course.

“It will be a test to see how we bounce back after this big win.”

Field hockey team rebounds

A return to TCAL play meant a return to winning ways for the Gilroy field hockey team, which ran away with a 7-0 win at Santa Catalina High Wednesday.

After a loss at Los Gatos over the weekend, the Mustangs (5-2) struck quickly against the Cougars. Starting with a score by junior Karlie Sandoval in the first minute, Gilroy rolled to six first-half goals.

Sandoval added another, along with Dana Schoeneman, Erin Magill, Shante Mancera and Elena Ramirez.

“The first half was a good 30 minutes of play,” co-head coach Adam Gemar said. “We played as a team.”

Senior Meg Perkins tacked on a goal in the second half and Gilroy moved to 4-0 in league play, with all four victories coming as shutouts.

The junior varsity Mustangs have been just as impressive. They moved to 6-0-1 after taking apart Santa Catalina, 14-0.
