Gilroy police discovered more than 550 marijuana plants inside a 5,000-square-foot warehouse on Monterey Street last week—valued at roughly $1 million, according to police.
The Gilroy Police Department’s Anti-Crime Team executed a search warrant on the property, on the 8500 block of Monterey Street, at approximately 2 p.m. Oct. 29 after concerned citizens alerted police to a potential “illegal cultivation operation,” a press release states.
Though no suspects were located at the scene, the investigation is ongoing and police say—preliminarily—that the main suspects responsible for the grow operation may have ties to San Jose. Detectives with the Anti-Crime Team are currently working with the San Jose Police Department.
“Typically these operations bring a level of danger and expose the surrounding areas to unnecessary risks of fire and a criminal element that we are not willing to tolerate as a community,” GPD Sgt. Pedro Espinoza said in the release. “We encourage our community members to continue to work with us in our efforts to suppress these types of illegal operations.”
