The following narratives were compiled from public records, obtained through the Gilroy Police Department, detailing arrests and unsolved crimes from April 3 through 10.
Man enters home, assaults woman
On April 8, Gilroy police arrested a 24-year-old man who allegedly violated a protection order against a former female friend and assaulted her.
Police say Gilroyan Fernando Salgado entered the woman’s residence somewhere in the vicinity of Church and Seventh streets uninvited and confronted the victim in her bedroom. Next, he covered her mouth and nose so she couldn’t breathe and forced her face downwards onto the bed.
The woman managed to free herself from Salgado’s grasp and later reported the crime to local authorities.
Salgado returned to the victim’s home later that day-where police were waiting-and he was arrested at 2:28 p.m. and charged with two felonies: inflicting bodily injury against another and violation of a protective order with prior offenses. He also had a warrant out for battery and remains locked up at the Santa Clara County Jail on $85,000 bail as of press time.
Juveniles steal candy, potato chips and energy drinks
On April 8 at 2 p.m., three juvenile males entered Safeway, at 905 First St., with intent to steal snacks. While one teenager carried a red handbasket, the other two stuffed nearly $40 in sour candy, potato chips, energy drinks and other snacks in the basket before fleeing in a gray 1991 Ford Ranger pickup truck, according to police.
Officers tracked down the vehicle the suspects fled in and handed them citations for petty theft. The thieves were released to their parents, police said. Since the thieves are under the age of 18, their names are not public information.
Stabbing on Wayland Lane
On April 9 at 1:33 a.m., an unknown male approached another man on Wayland Lane between First Street and Broadway and called out his name to get him to come closer. The unknown male then stabbed the second man in the abdomen with a knife, police said.
The victim was transported to the San Jose Regional Medical Center with a non-life threatening injury, while the suspect remained at large as of press time.
Robber brandishes knife, trots off with case of beer
On April 9 just before 3 a.m., an unknown male entered the 24-hour CVS store located at 825 First St. He headed over to the refrigerated section of the store and picked himself out a chilled 18-pack of Tecate beer.
But instead of paying for the beer, he brandished a concealed knife to two counter clerks. The man then fled on foot, with Tecate in hand, and remained at large as press time, police said.
