The Christopher boys water polo team came out in full force for Thursday’s season opener.Â
The Cougars topped Harbor, who were the home team despite the game being held at CHS, 21-4. Zach Gallardo led the offense, going 7 for 8 in the game and picking up three steals.Â
Max Deliz was a perfect 4 for 4 in the game and scored first for Christopher just 32 seconds into the game.Â
Christopher led 13-2 at the break and the Cougars continued to outscore Harbor 8-2 in the second half.Â
The Christopher defense, anchored by Gordy Papalias, gave up two goals in the third quarter, but held Harbor to a scoreless fourth. Goalie Ryan Weberg, who was returning after a year’s hiatus, stopped 17 shots on goal.
“We were a little nervous—a little rushed and a little anxious,” coach Paul Wells said. “You always have to take Harbor seriously even in a rebuilding year. …We have to do a better job of being more deliberate. At times we got a little greedy and overplayed the situation resulting in missed opportunities.”Â
Christopher will be back in the water at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Gilroy High.Â
GIRLS WATER POLO
The Gilroy girls water polo team lost its season opener 17-2 at San Lorenzo Valley.

The Mustangs will host Christopher at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
VOLLEYBALL

Olivia Tabron led the off Cougars to a 25-22, 25-10, 25-19 win with 11 kills in the match. Ally Foster had seven.Â
Christa Arroyo racked up 23 assists for Christopher and Amanda Hebison came up big with six aces in the game.
The Cougars (1-0) will play in the Spikefest I tournament held at Milpitas and Independence High Schools at 8 a.m. Saturday.Â
FIELD HOCKEY
Christopher opened the season with a 2-1 loss at Leland Thursday.Â
The hosts took a 2-0 before Erin Mank scored a goal which coach Lia Peterson said seemed to “shock the goalie a bit.”
“I think with a few more games they will start to gel as a team,” Peterson said.Â
The Cougars (0-1) will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lynbrook.Â
