GILROY – Rebounding from a 76-29 pounding at the hands of Valley Christian early last week, Gilroy High’s girls basketball team rolled off two victories in a row to get back above .500 before entering the Seaside Sweet 16 Tournament starting Saturday.
The Mustangs downed Seaside 54-49 on Thursday and followed up the road-victory with another win away from home, topping Silver Creek 56-47 on Saturday.
Chelsea Hill had 15 points and 13 rebounds against Seaside, and guard Sovi Nou relieved some of the offensive pressure on the power forward by chipping in 13 points. Point guard Ashley Lambert had only three points but did an excellent job handling distribution duties, dishing out nine assists and ripping five steals. Lindsey Foster added nine points to go with seven rebounds.
Hill had another big game against Silver Creek, scoring 14 points to go with a game-high 17 rebounds and six steals. She has now recorded a double-double in points and rebounds in every game but one this season.
Lambert found her stroke from beyond the perimeter, making four of seven shots and three three-pointers to finish with 12 points. Lambert also had three assist, two rebounds and two steals. Laura Steele had five points and eight rebounds for the Mustangs.
Recent addition Michelle Sosa, a freshman, continues to impress on the varsity level. Gilroy coach Susan Shapiro said the newcomer is “proving her worth,” as Sosa went on score eight points while also reaching double-figures in rebounding with 10.
Gilroy is now 6-4 on the season.
